Family Resource Center will sign up families and sponsors
for the Holiday Helper Program from November 1 through
November 23. This program coordinates requests for holiday
assistance and donations from the community. Parents in
financial hardship, worried about being unable to provide
holiday gifts for their children, are encouraged to call
the Center at 884-5433. They may also stop by during
office hours, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. There
is a simple and confidential enrollment process.
SPONSORS:
Individuals, families, businesses and organizations are
also encouraged to sign up as sponsors. Every donation
goes directly to a local child or family. This is an easy
and fun way to spread some holiday cheer, and makes the
holidays meaningful and memorable for all.

I have a specialized one! I need some fluent Spanish
speakers who would be willing to work with me on a Latino
parent group that PSD has recently formed. It would entail
working with children and adults whose native language is
Spanish. They would do some community building and even
help with transportation to the meetings, if they could do
that. Ann

My daughter, Heather "Indi"
McCasey, works for Washington Water Ways. It is a
non-profit organization. There are only two paid
employees. They, she in particular, organize volunteers and
lead workshops to clean up our water ways for non-motorized
boats and also to protect the environment. She has her BA
degree from Western Washington in Environmental ED and has
indicated she would be responsive to acting as a mentor to
any seniors interested. She could explain what she can
offer better than I. If anyone has any interest, please
e-mail me through the school, at home at:
justmeinwa@comcast.net or call me at 253-851-1919. I
will get her work number and pass that on. It would take a
lot of work for anyone willing to do it, but would be a
worth while project.

I would like high school student(s) who is/are good with
editing to work with fifth grade students at Vaughn
Elementary. They might even take a small group and develop a
student newspaper. It would be a great project. Or work
with children during noon recess with a chess club for all
ages interested. I would be interested in helping the students
with this club. It would be a good way to teach children
strategies and good sportsmanship. Anne Puckett at Vaughn.

This year a senior had intended to
do publicity for the school plays as her project. Even though
she was unsuccessful, it is still a project I would embrace
and be happy to mentor even if need be. If a senior had an
interest in Public Relations or drawing it could be a nice
fit. Other students have done set design and been very
successful, creating exemplary sets for our shows.

I am the
site coordinator for Evergreen After ‘Ours program. I had
several seniors from PHS this year fulfill community service
time volunteering here at the program. A few of the students
did senior projects, such as an environmental class, a soccer
clinic, and a sign language class. Some students chose to give
tutorial help to the students. The only requirement is that if
they choose to volunteer here they must commit to a session. A
session last about six to seven weeks. They can work one or
two days a week. The program is run on Tuesday and Thursday,
we still have not decided if we are going to add a third day
next year. If you have any questions please do not hesitate
to email me or you can contact me at Evergreen Elementary

When I was explaining to the seniors in my class how to do
their speeches, I needed a mock project, so I thought of a non
profit community service project that actually used to exist
in Seattle. This group would take donation bicycles and fix
them up in their shop. Kids from the community would get a
bike, fix it up in the shop, and get to keep it. The project
would be to create a shop using donated space, tools, and
parts, and fix bikes either for sale or for a kid to
personally ride.

problem is, none of our staff are dance teachers. For the
past few years, we have had GHHS seniors lead a group (with a
staff as supervisor) as a senior project.

Nativity House , the drop-in place for homeless, always needs
blankets, warm clothes, sleepy bags, toiletries. The Tone
School for the homeless can always USE BACKPACKS, SCHOOL
SUPPLIES, UNDIES, SHOES. Elderly people in the community need
rides to the grocery store and hair dresser.. Some need light
housework..The kids on the lower peninsula need everything,
esp coats, jackets, undies, school supplies. The list is
endless. Creating a bank of these items can help lots of
people. A senior who knows how to organize and coordinate
would be super.

During the summer Thom Worlund and I coach a unified Special
Olympics softball team. A unified team has both special needs
player and support players. We have a great time and the
commitment is practice every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to
7:30 PM at Artondale Elementary starting June 30th .
In August we have one tournament the first weekend in Olympia
then some fun games in both Gig Harbor and Tacoma. Anyone is
welcome, any skill level,…….they need a mitt and a medical
form filled out by parents.

Preserving old copies of the school newspaper in a
professional binding of some sorts. Outlook funds will pay for
the materials. These bindings could go in the school library
to preserve the history of PHS. Think how fun and educational
it would be to look at pictures of old students (their hair!
their styles! etc.) and old clubs and what different students
were focused on in different time periods… a lot of laughter
and a lot of thinking would probably ensue. Derek Smith

I am a teacher at Artondale and my son Neil will be a senior
at GHHS next year. I am pleased he is already thinking of
ideas for his project but hasn't hit on the right one yet. I
did see an idea on a national news television show I thought
a senior girl might find fun. Somewhere in the U.S. a high
school project was having seniors wear their prom and formal
wear to a nursing home the day after the dance and putting
on a fashion show for the seniors. This might be better
suited to a retirement home, but the idea is that high
school students put a lot of effort into getting their
formal wear and they might have a good time showing it off
one more time. Most importantly, it creates a link with
seniors in the community and shows them how great today's
high school students are!

Carol Alex PHS paraeducator I don’t know if this idea has
already been suggested, but at PHS there is GREAT need for
beautification & repair of our outside facilities. There was
only one Parent Booster’s Campus Cleanup this year and
the weeds are rampant! It would be great to see a senior take
this on as a school-wide event encompassing clubs and other
PHS organizations. It could be partnered with the Boosters as
they never get enough help! One can be done in the fall and
one in the spring for two different seniors. Believe me, as a
long-time volunteer coordinator, this can be a challenging
project. Doug Morley and I helped a senior girl with
beautifying a small area on campus this spring. She way
underestimated what it entailed and never completed it. I was
her mentor but she came to me late and relied on only a few
friends to help her. There was administration and maintenance
approval to obtain, funding to solicit and get approved (going
into the community for materials would have helped).
Advertising the event and seeking loads of volunteers would
have helped her gain human resources, and making a concrete
plan (a drawing) with designated jobs to assign would have
assured a successful project.

I would like to
see someone organize a gallery for the sale of student art
work. This could include student art from all grades. There
are so many talented students in the district and there
doesn’t seem to be an outlet for them to display/sell their
creations. We’ve had students organize art shows at the
library but something ongoing would be wonderful. Maybe
there’s a member of the community who has commercial space
they’d like to donate? I’d be happy to mentor or help a
student get started. Jan Home phone (253)

I run the child care center at HBHS and thought it would be
very helpful to have two students host a fundraiser to raise

could organize more than one fund raiser over the year. We
