From: JoyceK@psd401.net Joyce, Kathy T. I am a volunteer with the Prison Pet Partnership Program.   This coming year I will probably to mentoring another senior.  Feel free to contact me next September if you want more information.  Since I am on a one year contract which ends Wednesday, it would be best if you reached me at home, 265-6508

From: FoxMcdonnellK@psd401.net Fox-Mcdonnell, Kathryn A. I’m on the ACS Relay for Life committee and it would be nice to have some kids work on organizing the event or get a team going.  Contact me at fox@peninsula.wednet.edu

From: FesslerA@psd401.net Fessler, Ann  I have a specialized one!  I need some fluent Spanish speakers who would be willing to work with me on a Latino parent group that PSD has recently formed.  It would entail working with children and adults whose native language is Spanish.  They would do some community building and even help with transportation to the meetings, if they could do that.  Ann

From: LucasJ@psd401.net   Lucas, Jo My daughter, Heather "Indi" McCasey, works for Washington Water Ways.  It is a non-profit organization.  There are only two paid employees.  They, she in particular, organize volunteers and lead workshops to clean up our water ways for non-motorized boats and also to protect the environment.  She has her   BA degree from Western Washington in Environmental ED and has indicated she would be responsive to acting as a mentor to any seniors interested.  She could explain what she can offer better than I.  If anyone has any interest, please e-mail me through the school, at home at:  justmeinwa@comcast.net or call me at 253-851-1919.  I will get her work number and pass that on.  It would take a lot of work for anyone willing to do it, but would be a worth while project.

Purdy may need help with a large mural in its hallways. I would like to see current Purdy student’s art on the walls but the high school students could help the younger students or something… This is in the preliminary stages, so we can work with ideas  Tor Gilje  Purdy Elementary-  Art Specialist

I would like  high school student(s) who is/are good with editing to work with fifth grade students at Vaughn Elementary. They might even take a small group and develop a student newspaper.  It would be a great project.  Or work with children during noon recess with a chess club for all ages interested. I would be interested in helping the students with this club. It would be a good way to teach children strategies and good sportsmanship. Anne Puckett at Vaughn.

From: ThompsonG@psd401.net  The PEA is interested in having a student design and get up and running a web site.  We’d like for this to happen early this summer.  Ginger Thompson  GHHS/PEA Vice President

From: KurzP@psd401.net  This year a senior had intended to do publicity for the school plays as her project.  Even though she was unsuccessful, it is still a project I would embrace and be happy to mentor even if need be.  If a senior had an interest in Public Relations or drawing it could be a nice fit.  Other students have done set design and been very successful, creating exemplary sets for our shows.

From: McDonaldO@psd401.net McDonald, Olga M.
I am the site coordinator for Evergreen After ‘Ours program. I had several seniors from PHS this year fulfill community service time volunteering here at the program. A few of the students did senior projects, such as an environmental class, a soccer clinic, and a sign language class. Some students chose to give tutorial help to the students. The only requirement is that if they choose to volunteer here they must commit to a session. A session last about six to seven weeks. They can work one or two days a week. The program is run on Tuesday and Thursday, we still have not decided if we are going to add a third day next year.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me or you can contact me at Evergreen Elementary 884-3393

When I was explaining to the seniors in my class how to do their speeches, I needed a mock project, so I thought of a non profit community service project that actually used to exist in Seattle.  This group would take donation bicycles and fix them up in their shop. Kids from the community would get a bike, fix it up in the shop, and get to keep it.  The project would be to create a shop using donated space, tools, and parts, and fix bikes either for sale or for a kid to personally ride.

I’m a knitter, and I wonder if any seniors would be interested in learning to knit.  There are organizations that accept knitted caps, blankets, etc. to distribute to the homeless and/or to cancer patients.  Just a thought!  J

We always try to run an after school dance club at GMS.  Only problem is, none of our staff are dance teachers.  For the past few years, we have had GHHS seniors lead a group (with a staff as supervisor) as a senior project.

Here’s an Idea – Organized an arts and craft show for works by PHS Staff.  I think we have quite a few talented people here that don’t teach Art.  It would be good for students & staff to see people’s hidden talents.

Nativity House , the drop-in place for homeless, always needs blankets, warm clothes, sleepy bags, toiletries.  The Tone School for the homeless can always USE BACKPACKS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, UNDIES, SHOES. Elderly people in the community need rides to the grocery store and hair dresser.. Some need light housework..The kids on the lower peninsula need everything, esp coats, jackets, undies, school supplies.  The list is endless.  Creating a bank of these items can help lots of people. A senior who knows how to organize and coordinate would be super.

A student interested in drama could organize the play(of the homeroom teacher’s choice) and produce it for the parents to see.

From: paethm@psd401.net An idea for a senior project is for a student to study autism and work with an autistic student. This would not displace a certified staff person because most students are not assigned a 1:1 assistant at all time.  Mary Anne Hughbanks (Paeth) Goodman 858-5500

During the summer Thom Worlund and I coach a unified Special Olympics softball team.  A unified team has both special needs player and support players.  We have a great time and the commitment is practice every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Artondale Elementary starting June 30th  .  In August we have one tournament the first weekend in Olympia then some fun games in both Gig Harbor and Tacoma.  Anyone is welcome, any skill level,…….they need a mitt and a medical form filled out by parents.

smithdl@psd401.net Preserving old copies of the school newspaper in a professional binding of some sorts. Outlook funds will pay for the materials. These bindings could go in the school library to preserve the history of PHS. Think how fun and educational it would be to look at pictures of old students (their hair! their styles! etc.) and old clubs and what different students were focused on in different time periods… a lot of laughter and a lot of thinking would probably ensue.  Derek Smith 857-8174

From: rochellecisp@centurytel.net   Rochelle Doan  - Communities in Schools hosts several programs for students in the PSD.  We would be happy to provide information about service opportunities.  In particular, CISP hosts several mentoring programs to match older persons with younger students, either around reading (Mentoring Our Students for Reading Success) or around other social and or academic needs.   884-1996 or rochellecisp@centurytel.net  Rochelle Doan  Family Advocate

I am a teacher at Artondale and my son Neil will be a senior at GHHS next year. I am pleased he is already thinking of ideas for his project but hasn't hit on the right one yet. I did see an idea on a national news television show I thought a senior girl might find fun. Somewhere in the U.S. a high school project was having seniors wear their prom and formal wear to a nursing home the day after the dance and putting on a fashion show for the seniors. This might be better suited to a retirement home, but the idea is that high school students put a lot of effort into getting their formal wear and they might have a good time showing it off one more time. Most importantly, it creates a link with seniors in the community and shows them how great today's high school students are!

From: AlexC@psd402.net Carol Alex PHS paraeducator I don’t know if this idea has already been suggested, but at PHS there is GREAT need for beautification & repair of our outside facilities. There was only one Parent Booster’s Campus Cleanup this year and the weeds are rampant!  It would be great to see a senior take this on as a school-wide event encompassing clubs and other PHS organizations.  It could be partnered with the Boosters as they never get enough help!  One can be done in the fall and one in the spring for two different seniors.  Believe me, as a long-time volunteer coordinator, this can be a challenging project. Doug Morley and I helped a senior girl with beautifying a small area on campus this spring.  She way underestimated what it entailed and never completed it.  I was her mentor but she came to me late and relied on only a few friends to help her.  There was administration and maintenance approval to obtain, funding to solicit and get approved (going into the community for materials would have helped).  Advertising the event and seeking loads of volunteers would have helped her gain human resources, and making a concrete plan (a drawing) with designated jobs to assign would have assured a successful project.

Perhaps a student can collect directions and maps to all of the schools and have someone at info services post it on the school district website.

I would like to see someone organize a gallery for the sale of student art work. This could include student art from all grades. There are so many talented students in the district and there doesn’t seem to be an outlet for them to display/sell their creations. We’ve had students organize art shows at the library but something ongoing would be wonderful. Maybe there’s a member of the community who has commercial space they’d like to donate? I’d be happy to mentor or help a student get started.   Jan  Home phone (253) 549-4442 or at school (GHHS) 858-2064 til June 23 and after school begins in Sept.

From: LoeM@psd401.net Loe, Margaret  I run the child care center at HBHS and thought it would be very helpful to have two students host a fundraiser to raise funds for diapers and wipes for the child care center.  They could organize more than one fund raiser over the year.  We use about $5,000.00 worth of diaper for each school year.  Peg Loe, Director, Teacher, HBHS 253-858-5582 loem@peninsula.wednet.edu

  •  Cottesmore Child Development Center at Henderson Bay High School is in need of diapers and formula to help defer the cost to the teen parents. One community project could involve calling charitable organizations to ask for donations of diapers and formula. It costs the center $5,000.00 last year to supply diapers alone for all the children in the center. I am the Director of the center and I can be reached at this email or 858-5582. I appreciate the opportunity to ask for help. Thanks, Margaret Loe

  • Here are some opportunities for students who are musically or administratively inclined to help with a local non-profit organization. The Peninsula Youth Orchestra is a 501(c)3 organization in its 6th season. It involves about a hundred young musicians in four orchestras with professional instructors. The orchestra rehearses at Harbor Covenant Church, 5601 Gustafson Dr NW in Gig Harbor on Thursday afternoons (but service opportunities would not necessarily be restricted to that time frame). The executive director and contact person is Bonnie Hampton, 253-857-6062. Her e-mail address is dbhampton@juno.com. You could also direct questions to me: I am one of the directors of the orchestra. Opportunities for service are as follows:

Promotion assistant:  This individual would assist the Executive Director in promoting the beginning student program, the summer camp, special events, and concerts throughout the PYO season. Possible activities: writing and delivering press releases and creating promotional material such as brochures, posters, and flyers. Basic computer skills and an ability to meet deadlines are necessary.

Program assistant:  This individual would assist the Executive Director in running the PYO program during the school year. Possible activities would include: data entry, writing communications with PYO families, concert preparations, contacting volunteers, and assisting at rehearsals.

For the past 13 years our students have served the elderly at nursing homes and assisted living facilities, helped to maintain Kopachuck State Park and collected food and money for the Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank. Our program is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders from October to May. Students volunteer one afternoon every other week all throughout the school year. Each year over 60 students participate in our program. Thanks for including us in your directory.
