The goals of this program are to prepare students for successful careers that match up to their interests and skills, receive practical consumer skills they will need to survive in the future, prepare them for transition from school to work and life-long learning, provide opportunities for students to function as responsible individuals and leaders, promote student understanding of the importance of work, and improve student self-worth and maximize their potential. The first semester is designed to prepare students for their future roles in the workplace by helping them develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that lead to successful careers of the future. The fundamentals of researching careers; finding and applying for jobs; filling out applications; writing resumes, cover letters, and letters of applications; interviewing for jobs, effective communications on the job; attitudes and relationships on the job; employer/employee expectations; safety on the job; workplace harassment and ethics; and setting realistic career goals for the future are some of the basic concepts that will help students prepare for the workplace. The second semester is designed to prepare students for their future roles as responsible citizens. The fundamentals of managing money; understanding banking services; filling out income tax forms; using credit; insurance issues; developing good social skills; time management; and learning to become successfully independent are some of the basic concepts that will help students prepare for success in life as citizens. |

Students will complete at least one extended learning activity.Portfolio; In this course the students will complete their Portfolio and continue to define their Pathway – 2 of the 4 P’s required by Washington State. The other P’s, Project and Plan, will be completed before the student graduates from PHS. The Portfolio will be divided into four sections: o Student as Learner o Student as Citizen o Student as Worker o Student as Individual Each student is required to purchase a 1˝” or 2” white pocket binder and enough top loading protective sheets to hold all of the necessary documents that will be put into this portfolio.
