Role of the CTE - General Advisory Committee
The role of the CTE General Advisory Committee (GAC) has changed over the past couple years in response to state level CTE reform. Just a few years ago this select group of district staff and community volunteers was required to review and approve program changes and spending plans that were submitted annually to the State of Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). CTE’s standards based reform and the adoption of the career pathways has changed the role of this group of community volunteers. Different from the directive oversight role of the past, this committee has been formed to provide a broader range of curricular support to the district’s administration and CTE teaching staffs.
The GAC is responsible to help insure that the CTE curriculum taught in Peninsula School District high schools reflect courses and programs under each of the five career pathways and that these course’s curricula is timely in its content, materials and methods.
Here at Peninsula School District, the GAC has been organized to include a community representative for each of the five career pathways. These volunteers have been asked to familiarize themselves with Peninsula School District’s current CTE course and program offerings within the assigned pathway in order to assist district administration and CTE teaching staff to locate participants and identify activities that support the local program. These volunteer program advocates will provide an important link between the classroom and community industry in the support of our CTE courses.
Over the next several years the state and federal requirements for CTE programs will be reviewed. Each of these reviews will require advisory input. The district’s GAC and individual CTE teacher advisory contacts will play a major role in this process.
