Frequently Asked Questions

2009 Replacement Levy Request

Q.
Aren’t we already paying taxes for the last levy? Why is the School District asking for money again?
A.

By law levies last for a maximum of four years and then expire. The last
four-year levy Peninsula School District voters approved was in 2005.
Funding provided by the 2005 levy will disappear after 2009.

The levy currently being proposed is a replacement for the 2005 levy and
will provide the funding to allow our schools to continue to operate at
current levels.

Q.
I thought the State was supposed to pay for public schools.
Why does Peninsula School District need a replacement levy?
A.

Traditionally, the State of Washington provides a little over 70% of the
revenue needed to operate local school districts. Another 10% of funding
comes from federal monies and other sources (such as fees, interest
earnings, etc).

The remaining 20% of operating costs are funded by levies approved by
voters. So while revenue from the State is significant, it does not cover all
the costs of running schools.
