the gathering, writing, and presenting of science information found in the news
media.
Students will
have four current science reports to complete during the year.
Find an article or news story that deals with an Earth or physical science topic. The following are some good sources.
Publications: The News Tribune, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Reports.
Websites: www.sciencedaily.com, http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Science, www.space.com.
Read the article
carefully.
Complete a write-up that includes the following parts:
1. List
the following information about the article:
Author’s
name, if given (last name first).
“Title” (in quotes).
Name of Newspaper, Magazine, Program,
or Website (underlined).
Date of the story.
2.
Write a paragraph or two that tell what the article is about.
Use
your own words to summarize and explain the story.
3. List three facts contained in the article. Use complete sentences.
4. Write
a reaction paragraph that expresses your thoughts and feelings about the
content of the story.
Do not react to how it was written or whether you like the topic. Use these
questions as guides:
Is it important, shocking, depressing, etc?
How might it affect you, the lives of others, the future?
How should we respond to this information?
Be prepared to share your news story with the class.
