Curriculum Overview

In kindergarten, the technology curriculum focuses on helping children become comfortable in using computers and accessing activities to help reinforce readiness skills that are taught within the kindergarten curriculum.

In grade one, computer literacy is initiated by identifying the basic components of the computer. Students begin keyboarding by locating letters, numbers, and special keys on the keyboard. Various educational websites, as well as Microsoft Word  and Paint, are explored.  PowerPoint is introduced.

In grade two, students begin learning simple computer terminology and how to take proper care of the computer. They complete home row keyboarding lessons in New Keys for Kids. Word, Paint and PowerPoint features are explored using a variety of activities throughout the year.

Third grade students complete basic keyboarding lessons using an online touch typing program called Typing Master.  They also review basic features in Word such as adding borders, formatting and aligning text,  working with text boxes, and inserting graphics.  PowerPoint basics are practiced with a multi-slide presentation. Organization of folders and documents is also introduced.

Grades four and five start with a review of all the basic features in Word to help prepare students for grade level word processing projects.  After that, students take part in a digital citizenship discussion and practice various Internet search strategies, using NetTrekker as their primary search engine. GoogleApps is now available through our district so students are able to create and share documents, access Gmail, and experiment with website setup.  Each student sets up folders for document storage.   Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel are all reviewed and practiced during the school year.  Typing Master is the keyboard program used for warm-up.
