Outside Reading Assignments (All English Classes):
Check website under “Literary Circles- May/June” section for specific assignment directions. Pay close attention to directions. If you have questions - ask!
Due Tuesday, 10/23:
Background paragraph on author - Include setting, time era, events, you will read about in the novel, the reason they wrote the book, and a little of their writing history. Students who are in a lit. circles grp. can assign 1 person to do this job.
SOAPSTONE entry on the first three chapters. Make your own format, based on the one I gave you in class and fill it out, again, as we did in class. You only need to do one for the three chapters, not one each. Students who are in a lit. circles grp. need to do their own SOAPSTone. this is not a grp. assignment.
Due By 11/27:
Below are listed all the assignments you must turn in by Tuesday, November 11th. Late work will not be accepted. If you are reading the book by yourself, you will decide when to complete the activities that best suits your schedule. If you are in a Lit. Circles Grp. (L.C.), you will need to meet with your partners to determine when & who will be responsible for certain assignments. Look for directions next to the assignment labeled L.C.
Reading Log: As you begin the novel, write down your own observations as well as words and phrases you quote from the novel. Each day you read, your journal should contain 1) the date, 2) pages you've read (52-89), and 3) an entry like the example given below.You may know this as a double entry journal. Divide your paper into 2 columns. On the left side, title the column "Quotes & Observations," and on the right side label the column "Analysis." Each person will turn in their reading log on 11-27-07.
Quotes and Observations ! Analysis
“Had her conduct been more friendly to me. She seems sympathetic, or at least willing to be so. I would have felt sorry for her.” p. 22- She shows no remorse for her actions in class. She is convinced she was right and was unfairly punished.
“Jem and I found our father satisfactory: Interesting way to classify a relationship with a he played with us, read to us, and treated us with father, “detach[ed].” But she doesn’t seem saddened courteous detachment.” p. 6 by it, he appears more as a mentor or friend than ------ parental figure? Will this continue?
Book Talk: You will need to meet with me individually or as a grp. 2x's before 11-27-07. I will expect you to bring your book with you for the conference. You will tell me to what page you've read. I will be asking you questions about character, plot, theme, setting, conflicts, etc. that you have encountered up to that point. You should be conversant with all literary elements included in the novel up to the point you've read. L.C. grps. - no one person may dominate the conversation.
Post-it Note your Book: I will collect your book on 11-27-07. I will expect to find NUMEROUS post-it notes with questions, comments, reactions, etc. to the text. I will also expect to find sections that indicate where you have used the following reading strategies: Previewing, Chunking the Text, Predicting, Marking the Text, Questioning the Text, Skimming/Scanning, Activating Prior Knowledge, Visualizing, Guided Reading. If you don't understand anything listed, please ask for direction.
