STYLES OF MODERN ART

I.                     ASSIGNMENT

A.      Using the Internet explore each of the following schools of modern art. Give an explanation/ definition of each term, a picture example and name an artist associated with that art form.

                                                              1.      Expressionism

                                                              2.      Cubism

                                                              3.      Surrealism

                                                              4.      Abstract Expressionism (Pure Abstraction)

                                                              5.      Dadaism

B.     From the 5 styles of art you investigated, choose the one style you like best.  Then,  print a copy of a work that exemplifies this type of art and that you consider the best.  Color copies that are the size of a standard sheet of paper work best.

C.       Write a brief analysis which:

                                                              1.      Provides the artists name, title, and date of the work, (as a caption under the picture)

                                                              2.      Identifies the style of art.

                                                              3.      Explains how the piece captures or reflects the style.

                                                              4.      Relates why you selected this piece.

                                                              5.      How is the painting a departure from the past?

                                                              6.      What is your overall opinion of modern art?

                                         7.     Include MLA citations for definitions, pictures & any quotes you may use.

                                         8.     Include a works cited page properly formatted.

                    D. Example for citing a picture from the internet:

                            What to include -

                            Author (Last name, first). "Picture Name." Name of Page or Website. Update/Copyright Date. Name of  Sponsoring Organization. Your access date <web address>.
