Relevancy Responses for Literature Circles
After choosing a question from the list, each group member will bring in an additional, outside source that addresses the issue(s) in the novel and the question(s). That information will be shared with group members during the next discussion session and used to help write the formal response. Each article must include proper MLA source and citation information.
As a group, you will write a 250 word paragraph that answers the question(s) you chose. You must incorporate information from each group member’s source. Additionally, a quote from one of the sources needs to be incorporated into the paragraph, along with one from the novel. The paragraph will be written during one discussion session and a rough draft is due before the end of the period. The final word processed, double spaced document is due the following session.
During the next session, your group will meet with every other reading group and engage in a “Jig Saw” discussion. You will identify which question(s) you chose and share your response(s). Each group member will be responsible for discussing some portion of the group’s response. The other teams should have an opportunity to question, react and debate them. The recorder should take notes of the discussion and report assenting and dissenting opinions. After one team has presented the other follows suit in the same manner. When both groups have finished the process they will then continue the process with the next group.
*** It will be important to keep to a time schedule during the “Jig Saw,” to ensure that all groups are able to meet together. A time limit needs to be agreed upon at the beginning of the period. The instructor will remind teams when it is time to move on.
