ASSIGNMENT: WRITING AND PERFORMING A DIALOGUE

 

This assignment will ask you and a partner to write a 3-5 minute dialogue between two characters, real or fictional, (no created characters) create a scene and perform it for the class.  You will base your dialogue on one of the themes listed below. 

 

THEMES

  1. Laws can be unjust
  2. Traits in characters can be both good and bad
  3. There are two sides to every argument
  4. Tragic Hero figure
  5. Loyalty (to a higher allegiance)

 

 

 

I. DIALOGUE ASSIGNMENT

            A. Your introduction must define, identify and explain the theme of your dialogue and the characters that

                are speaking.

            B.  Total length: 3 to 5 minutes

            C.  Props, scenery and costumes are appropriate.

            D.  You must share speaking time equally.

            E.  Your dialogue must have a resolution.

            F.  If you choose a non-fictional character, such as from the Western. Civ. “Classical

                 Values” list of character, your information should be based on historical fact(s).

            G.  If your characters come from your personal life, you must change their names.

 

 

II. ORGANIZATION

A.     Use standard dialogue format when writing your scene

B.     Organize your dialogue around a clear, well developed introduction.

C.     Your dialogue must contain at least three (3) examples that support your claim.  Actual facts/evidence from history may be included and must be cited. Information obtained from books, TV, movies, etc. must also be cited.

 

III. MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS

A.     The dialogue must be word-processed. 14 point font or larger will be best for ease in reading.

B.     Set the margins at 1 inch and the spacing at double.

C.     Provide a title for your dialogue.

D.     Internal citations in proper MLA form are required when you use a direct quote.  Information about how to use internal citations, also called parenthetical references, can be found at http://www.mla.org.

E.      Page numbers are not required for papers shorter than two pages.

 

IV. EVALUATION

A.     This assignment will be worth _______ points.

B.     Assessment will be based on the criteria established on the rubric on the website (please attach to your dialogue).

C.     Your responsibility after the presentations - From your notes on others’ presentations, give 1 example of each of the 5 themes listed above and turn in to your instructor.
