EUROPEAN MONARCHS

 

I. ASSIGNMENT

A.     As a group (2 students per group) you will need to research an individual monarch and evaluate their effectiveness using the concepts we learned this unit.

B.     You will be assigned one of the following rulers:

1.      Louis XIII (Fr.)                                      9. James I (GB)

2.      Louis XV (Fr.)                                     10. Charles I (GB)

3.      Louis XVI (Fr.)                                    11. Charles II (GB)

4.      Charles V (Sp.)                                    12. James II (GB)

5.      Philip II (Sp.)                                        13. Frederick the Great (Pr.)

6.      Maria Theresa (Aus.)                            14. Ivan the Terrible (Rus.)

7.      Henry VIII (Eng.)                                 15. Peter the Great (Rus.)

8.      Elizabeth I (Eng.)                                  16. Catherine the Great (Rus.)

C.     Focus your research around the following guiding questions:

1.      What are some interesting anecdotal stories associated with your ruler?

2.      Were they a good or bad example of an absolute monarch?

3.      What specific evidence supports your viewpoint?

D.     Organize your information into an interesting and informative 5-8 minute presentation to the class.  Your primary purpose is to convince the class that your monarch was either a good or bad example of an absolute monarch.

E.      A word-processed topic outline of your information will be collected prior to your presentation.  Your outline should include:

1.      a distinct and developed introduction, body, and conclusion.

2.      complete details of your actual presentation.

3.      a list of the sources you used for your information.  These must be cited in the correct MLA form.

F.      An organized visual aid must accompany and support your presentation.  The visual should be used throughout the presentation and support your main points.

G.     Although this is a group project, each individual is expected to assume equal responsibility for the final product.  Please see me if you are having difficulty with your partner.

 

II. ASSESSMENT

A.     This represents the culminating project for this semester and you are therefore expected to approach this assignment with a commitment to do your very best work.

B.     Individually you will be evaluated on your delivery of the presentation (points).

C.     As a group you will receive the same grade for your:

1.      Topic Outline (points).

2.      Presentation ( points).

3.      Visual Aid ( points).
