Six Characteristics of Totalitarianism

 

1.  There is only 1 political party/power allowed.

·        no others tolerated

·        trying to form one will land you in prison.

 

2. The leaders are likened to gods—maybe even smarter.

 

3. Social & political order is above the law.

·        More important that peoples rights.

·        Violation of people’s civil rights OK if for the good of state.

·        Fear, interrogation OK to use against people if it gets you what you want.

 

4. Education is to be controlled by the state

·        ALL of it -  moral, academic, physical.

·        The state will decide what is appropriate to be taught (materials) or seen. 

·        Education must support the aims of the govt.

 

5. Civil Rights /Individual Rights are abolished.

 

6. Terrorism, murder, betrayal are all OK if done for the state—the party. 

·        The ends justify the means.

·        No one is to be trusted.

 

 

DEFINITIONS

 

Communism

  1. State owns all means of production means of production
  2. dictatorship of the people
  3. classless society

 

Socialism

1.      Society as a whole, not private individual would own all property and operate all businesses

 

Fascism

1.      Glorification of the state.

2.      Aggressive nationalism.

3.      One party system guided by a strong ruler.

4.      Private property OK, but should be regulated by govt.
