I originally wanted to include a film clip from The Boxer or In the Name of the Father, two films about Northern Ireland’s conflict, and in both movies I saw that the sides of buildings throughout Belfast were covered in graffiti and slogans of the various factions. So, I went to the library and found a book on Ireland that listed a source in its bibliography called, Drawing Support: Murals in Northern Ireland by Bill Rolston. I couldn’t find the book anywhere, but Rolston has his own homepage on which he posts pictures of murals that he saw in Northern Ireland. I think that as a genre this is not only very unique but I think it’s also very important because the murals are everywhere, which means there is no escaping this conflict.
