Dear Parents:
Last year many of your students read and studied Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. In the newly adopted curriculum for the tenth grade this is also the major novel of study. In an attempt to expose students to different culture and a variety of literature, we have selected The Kite Runner as the substitution for Things Fall Apart. Highly acclaimed and noted for its literary merit, this novel deals with some mature themes relevant to today and the current political and cultural issues. We encourage you to read along with your students and engage them in conversation about these themes and hope you will find this a remarkable opportunity to connect with your student through meaningful discussions.
A note to parents: Before approving each book our staff carefully considers it for its literary merit and ability to engage students. However, great literature addresses important ideas and sometimes contains situations or language some people may find disturbing. Please peruse any of the books that your son/daughter will be required to read. Let the teacher know if you have any concerns or if you would like to borrow a copy of any of these books. The Uglies, Kite Runner
