Unit 2 – Families & Celebrations: Embedded Assessment 1 – Film Analysis

Assignment: Your assignment is to analyze how a cultural conflict is presented in the film you have studied. The conflict may have occurred within a culture or between cultures. This analysis should identify the conflict, examine the reasons behind it, and explain how it is resolved. Your analysis also needs to consider what theatrical elements the director used to demonstrate this conflict.

  1. After you have viewed Not Without My Daughter, organize your initial thoughts by brainstorming all the various types of conflicts represented in the film. In identifying all the various conflicts through brainstorming, you must also identify the significance of the conflict to the film as a whole. Your brainstorm should include at least six conflicts from three different categories represented in the film.
  2. When you have completed your brainstorm you should have, at least, two or three conflicts from the film that you feel comfortable analyzing in more depth. Choose one category.
  3. Pre-Writing: once you have selected a conflict to analyze, complete a meaningful pre-write. This pre-write may take any form (outlining, a graphic organizer, Venn diagram, spider map, cluster map) but must be focused on 1) the conflict, 2) the theatrical/film techniques or elements used to demonstrate the conflict, and 3) the significance of the conflict to the film as a whole.
  4. First Draft: begin drafting by using your pre-write and notes to organize your thoughts. Begin with the body of your paper. It will be easier to write the intro and conclusion as well as your thesis statement once you know what the meat of your essay will be about. Please type.
    1. Go back to your notes,

                                                              i.      Identify the causes of the conflict you chose

ii.      Select strong examples of the theatrical/film techniques from the film that support the conflict you chose. Consider this question: What does the director do to convey the conflict?

    1. Identify how the technique(s) help present the conflict to the viewer in an effective way. Utilize your new knowledge of film terminology to provide clear and noteworthy analysis.
    2. Then, consider what meaningful significance (specific to this example and your chosen conflict) can be further explained in your analysis. In doing so, consider how the conflict is resolved. Does the resolution of the conflict hint at the larger significance of the conflict in the film?
    3. Repeat this process for as many causes and theatrical/film elements as will make your analysis and essay provocative and effective.
    4. Finish by writing a complete and focused thesis statement as well as introductory and concluding paragraphs.
  1. Revision: you will complete a self-assessment in class. In addition, one person outside of class will read and comment on your first draft.
  2. Second Draft: your second draft will go through a peer-review protocol in which you will receive specific feedback in response to areas of your writing that you identified as needing improvement. Again, you will ask an additional person to read and comment on you second draft.
  3. Final Draft: turned in with
    1. Final draft: include title, proper heading, and page numbers; format properly.
    2. Brainstorming
    3. Pre-writing
    4. First Draft: include self-assessment, editing/revision marks obvious on draft, signature of outside reader on last page of draft.
    5. Second Draft: include peer-review protocol, editing/revision marks obvious on draft, signature of different outside reader on last page of draft.
    6. Assignment Sheet/Rubric
