WHO WAS THE BEST RENAISSANCE ARTIST?
I. INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT (20 points)
A. You will assigned one of the following artists to research:
1. Botticelli. 9. Bellini
2. Donatello. 10. Ghiberti
3. Dürer. 11. Giotto
4. Holbein, the Younger. 12. Caravaggio
5. Leonardo da Vinci. 13. Titan
6. Michelangelo. 14. Brueghel
7. Raphael. 15.Bosch
8. Van Eyck. 16. Masaccio
B. An excellent Internet source is Mark Harden’s Artchive located at www.artchive.com/. Enter the site through the Mona Lisa icon and you will find the specific artists listed alphabetically on the left.
C. Read the biographical material about your artist and view all their works listed under the image list.
D. Print a color copy of what you consider to be their single best work. For this assignment, copies with the picture filling the entire page work best.
E. Based on your selection, write a word-processed paper which:
1. provides a brief introduction of your artist, the complete title of their work you selected, and where it is currently located.
2. defends your choice by explaining how well it uses Renaissance artistic techniques, produces an emotional response, and reflects the spirit of the Renaissance.
3. lists the source of your picture in proper MLA form.
F. Staple your word-processed paper to the top of the picture.
II. GROUP ACTIVITY (possible bonus points)
A. Each person will need to share the picture they selected and defend their choice to the group.
B. As a group you will need to select the single picture that you think represents the artist’s best work.
C. Using the picture the group selects, prepare and deliver a persuasive presentation that attempts to convince the class that your artist deserves the title of “Best Renaissance Artist.”
D. After all the presentations, each individual will cast votes. The artist/group with the most votes will receive bonus points!
