Medieval Essay

This essay will be written "on demand" style in class on December 13, 2005.  Please print out the assignment requirements listed below and the grading rubric to class with you.

 

To solidify your understanding of the Middle Ages, you will be composing an ON DEMAND essay analyzing the beliefs and values of this time period by examining how they are evident in the literature we read in class.  For this assignment, you will be building your paragraph writing skills and adding the skills of writing introductory and concluding paragraphs.

Option 1
Writing prompt:  Show how 1 commonly held belief or value from the Middle Ages is evident in 3 different pieces of medieval literature.
Option 2
Writing prompt:  Show how 3 commonly held beliefs or values from the Middle Ages are evident in two or three pieces of medieval literature.
 
Option 3

Writing prompt:  Show how 1 commonly held belief or value from the Middle Ages is NOT represented in one, two or three pieces of medieval literature.

Consider the literature read in both English and Western Civilization

  1. The Song of Roland   
  2. Beowulf   
  3. The Canterbury Tales 
  4. The Good Wife 
  1. The Grail
  2. The Inferno.
  3.  Diary of a Young Merchant
  4. Cheverfoil

WRITING PROCESS

Use as much pre-writing as you need. Some ideas to try are:

  • outlining your ideas

  • free-write about your topic

  • discussing your topic with peers

  • discussing your topic with a teacher

  • webbing notes from both classes related to your topic

FINAL DRAFT

Due December 13, 2004 – In class, ON DEMAND

Bring your notes, pre-writing & any handouts you need to complete this in 100 mintues.

The rough & final drafts needs to contain:

  1. a complete introduction containing your thesis statement

  2. one/three body paragraph(s) in which you develop your thesis

  3. three direct quotes

  4. a concluding paragraph

  5. 3 proper internal MLA citations

  6. Works Cited Page

  • Handwritten, double spaced using plain white or light yellow paper and black ink.

  • Double spaced

  •  Pages after the first are numbered.

  • Attach a completed scoring guide to the back of your paper.

 


 The grading rubric for the essay is provided below.  Please print out a copy and bring to class with you to attach to your final draft.
