LORD OF THE FLIES & Early Civilizations

For this assignment you will analyze one feature of civilization as it relates to the boys’ experience in Lord of the Flies.  To complete this assignment you will need to write a well-developed, expository paragraph.  The purpose of this paragraph is to clearly present, explain, and analyze information. Therefore, you will want to ensure that your writing is clear, detailed, and well-supported.   This assignment will count equally in history and English since it requires you to apply ideas and concepts from both classes.

I. Paragraph Assignment:

A.   What element of social control was missing or inadequate in Lord of the Flies?

B.    Support your answer with at least one direct quote from the book, and cite it using the proper MLA form.

II. Organization:

          A.  Use standard paragraph form to write your response.

          B.  Organize your paragraph around a clear and specific topic sentence.

          C.  Support your answer with specific and detailed examples/evidence

                from history and the novel.

III. Manuscript Requirements:

          A. The paragraph must be word-processed using appropriate 12-point

               font.

          B.  Set the margins at 1 inch and the spacing at double (2).

          C.  Page numbers are not required for papers shorter than two pages.

D.  Internal citations in proper MLA form are required when you use a

     direct quote. Clarification about how to use internal citations, also

    called parenthetical references, can be found at

E.  Provide a relevant and engaging title.

IV. Evaluation:

          A.  This assignment will be worth 300 points.

B.    Evaluation will focus on the criteria established on the writing rubric found on the Writer's Workshop link, (please attach to the back of your final draft).
