Group Work: Canterbury Tales
You will be reading three “tales” written by Geoffery Chaucer about a group of people who go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury during the Middle Ages. For each tale you and your partner will produce the following:
1. Explain who your pilgrim is and what does his/her name mean?
2. Describe the social role of this person in English society during the Middle Ages.
3. Write a brief “bullet” summary of the tale.
4. Identify at least 2 values/beliefs that relate to those from the Middle Ages.
5. Write down at least 2 quotes that support/display those values/beliefs.
6. Write down MLA work cited info.
7. Write down MLA internal citations info.
8. Be able to explain what the story shows about the lifestyle of the time for the class.
Process
Each group member will read at least one paragraph in each selection
After each paragraph discuss which, if any, values/beliefs from the Middle Ages were evident. Then, lightly underline, in pencil, the quote(s) you found - write #1 next to the 1st one then on your piece of paper indicate the value/belief it represents. (Repeat process for quotes 2 and 3). After the entire tale has been read, then go back and write down the quote next to the value.
Choose one member to write the bullet summary for that article. All members will discuss what info. should be included.
While the summary is being written, the other three members will write down the values identified, quotes, and MLA information for both internal citations and the works cited page. You will be allowed to make copies for your partners later.
