Team Time is at 1:00 today. Wear tennis shoes!

MATH HOMEWORK

  1. Play a two or three games of Triple Compare using primary number cards.  Use your addition strategies to figure out the total.
  2. Play Roll and Record 2 times.  Directions: Roll 2 dice.  Add the numbers.  Write the sum on the recording sheet.  The game is over when one column is full.  You may also play Black Out.
  3. How Many Baseballs? page 45 - Solve this problem by drawing a picture, writing an equation and labeling your answer.

With your parents, read Time for Kids-The Seasons of an Apple Tree. Talk about cycles, and explain why the story moves in a circle, rather than from left to right.

Complete the apple patterns using crayons or colored pencils.  Also, complete the Time to Eat graph on the back of the apple graph.

Homework is due today!

Please make sure both you and your parents have signed each paper and then put it in the Notes From Home basket first thing in the morning.

* Please return your Primary Number Cards today.  I use these year after year so I really appreciate you returning them.

Black and White Orca Day Today!

Last week we welcomed Mrs. Wendy Cushner to our K/1/2 MAP meeting.  She is a former HH and MAP parent, as well an extremely talented musician.  MAP is thrilled to have her join us once a month to share her love of music with our classes.

CONGRATULATIONS 1ST GRADERS!  ALL STUDENTS TURNED IN THEIR HOMEWORK LAST THURSDAY FOR THE 3rd WEEK IN A ROW!  This is a 1st grade MAP world record!  Way to go!

Readers Workshop: Our reading strategy this week is: Readers figure out words by moving through the whole word.  We run our finger underneath a word, from left to right, to focus on the whole word.   We first look at the beginning letters and then continue reading the entire word, always asking ourselves, “Does this make sense?”

Writers Workshop: Students learned about lists.  Please tell your child about the lists you make throughout your day and reasons you would make a list.  Show your child one of your lists.

Math Workshop: Students are solving How Many of Each? problems which give students 2 types of objects  (such as peas and carrots) and a total number (such 7). Students have to determine how many of each object they could have to make up the total.  These problems are challenging because there is more than one answer.

Science:  Please read the attached letter explaining our new science unit-Air and Weather.  With our first experiment-Air is There-students worked with a set of objects to see how objects can be moved by and through air.  A ziplock bag containing some of the objects your child used in this experiment is in this Thursday Folder.  In the 2nd investigation-Air Under Water-students used vials, paper towels and water to explore the idea that air takes up space. Ask your child if he/she could keep a paper towel dry underwater?

Sight Night: For the 5th year in a row the MAP classes will be collecting used eyeglasses and sunglasses on Halloween for the Lions Club.  Last year the kids collected 528 pairs of glasses. Look for more information and Sight Night door hangers in this Thursday Folder.

PLEASE NOTE

*Mrs. Leslie Holley will be coordinating our MAP Fall Celebration October 31st.  If you signed up to help with special activities Mrs. Holley will be contacting you to help with this celebration.

*October 31st-Halloween-Wear black and orange
(No costumes, please.)

*Thank you very much for dating each transportation note and identifying your child’s first and last name.

  • Play with 3 players.
  • Play with Wild Cards.  A Wild Card can be any number 0-10.
  1. Complete the worksheet-Play Double Compare at Home 2.
  2. Complete Compare Numbers-page 17and How Many?-page 18.
  3. Apples and Oranges-page 29

Penmanship Homework

Using a pencil and your neatest first grade printing please practice the “center starter” capital letters and the capital letter review.

Remember to always start your letters “at the top.”

Homework is due today!

Please make sure both you and your parents have signed each paper and then put it in the Notes From Home basket first thing in the morning.

* Please read with your child for 15 minutes or more each night.  It is important for your child to hear the language of reading and gain knowledge about inflection, punctuation, rhyming and phonemic awareness.

I hope you have a wonderful day off.  Let’s hope the weather will be nice so you can play outside, get fresh air and exercise.

*Words to our new song, Big Rock Candy Mountain, are on the back of this sheet.  Please sing the song to your family and teach them the motions.

CONGRATULATIONS 1ST GRADERS!  ALL STUDENTS TURNED IN THEIR HOMEWORK LAST THURSDAY FOR THE 2ND WEEK IN A ROW!  WHAT A RESPONSIBLE GROUP OF LEARNERS. WAY TO GO!

Readers Workshop: We read the stories Cat’s Colors by Jane Cabrera and Flower Garden by Eve Bunting.  Students made text-to-self connections and answered questions to better understand the stories.

Our 3rd reading strategy practiced this week is: Readers always think about what makes sense.  We want children to be more than word solvers.  We want children to be story builders, so no matter what decoding strategy they use, we want them to always check themselves by asking, “Does this make sense?”

Writers Workshop: Students gain confidence when writing if they don’t get stuck on tough words so we practice the strategy of “just spell the best you can and then keep on going.” We also are putting frequently used words on the Word Wall to help students develop a sight word list for those words they just need to know how to spell.

Math Workshop Students learned our story problem routine which is to first listen to the story problem and visualize the action in the story.  Students retell the story after they have heard it.  After retelling, students determine whether the end result in each case will be more or less than the amount started with.  Students then solve the problem on paper by first drawing a picture, then writing an equation which matches the picture and finally, labeling the answer.  Your child will show you how they solve story problems when working on page 29-Apples and Oranges.

Penmanship: We have reviewed all capital letters and are now learning lowercase letters.

PLEASE NOTE

*The sign-up sheets for November conferences are in the hallway outside of the music room until October 10th.

*Book Orders are due Wednesday, October 8th.

*Please put your first and last name on your lunch bag and all of your coats and sweatshirts.

*Next week there will be information coming home regarding our Halloween/Fall celebration.
