No School

Enjoy a special holiday weekend with your family and friends.

Due to conferences and the upcoming holiday there will be no homework given for the next 2 weeks.  Homework assignments will resume on December 3rd. In the meantime, here are some suggested activities to help reinforce your child’s learning:

Handwriting/Written Language:  Have your child do any or all of the following:

  • Practice good handwriting skills by writing the follow letters and numbers 10 times each: a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0.
  • Pick a small moment in your life; draw a picture and write about that small moment.
  • Write a list: grocery list, books list, errand list, toy list, to do list…or whatever list idea you may have.

Reading:  Please do at least 2 of these activities nightly:

  • Have your child read “just right” books for 15 minutes
  • Read out loud to your child
  • Have your child retell a story
  • After reading a book, ask your child to answer these questions:

Who are the characters? What is the setting? Is this a fiction or nonfiction book? What    was the main idea of the book?  Was there a problem in the story? How was it solved?

Math:  Play any or all of the following games:

  • Double Compare (Play with playing cards)
  • Heads and Tails
  • Fill Up Ten and Then Again to 80
  • Xtra Math

You may also practice counting and writing numbers to 100 by 10’s, 5’s and/or 2’s.

Sharing and Caring

Save the Date!

We would like to invite you to our 10th annual Sharing and Caring program.  This year your child will be singing in 2 programs.  Wednesday, Dec. 9th from 7 to 8 pm is our special performance for families, and Thursday, Dec. 10th at 9:15 is our school program.

Students and visitors are invited to bring new unwrapped toys, books, games, clothing, canned food and gift cards for those families in need during the holiday season.  We will donate all contributions to the Gig Harbor FISH and Key Peninsula Children’s Home Society.  Students may begin bringing in their items December 1st

1st Grade Update:

SIGHT NIGHT:  Congratulations to all MAP students for another successful Sight Night!  425 pairs of glasses were collected and given to the Lions Club.  These glasses will help many people in other countries see better.  You should be very proud of your efforts on this community service project.

READERS WORKSHOP: We read Caps for Sale and then the children retold the story.  As students practice retelling stories, they become increasingly familiar with the way plots develop and with other story elements such as character, setting, problems and solutions.  Retelling a sequence of events helps children make logical sense of the story and forms a foundation for talking about books.  Ask your child to retell Caps For Sale.

WRITERS WORKSHOP: Students looked through their journals and celebrated the growth they have made since September.  All of the children were amazed and so proud of how their writing has become much for focused, organized and interesting.

MATH: Students worked in groups of 2 or 3 making shape posters in which they identified and labeled common attributes of a group of shapes.  Students indentified the characteristics of triangles and quadrilaterals and then made triangles and quadrilaterals of different shapes and sizes.

CONFERENCES-Attached you will find your conference information.  If you need to change your day or time please call or e-mail me.  Report cards will be coming home Wednesday, November 18th.

MATH HOMEWORK

1.      More Story Problems-Please show your thinking by drawing a picture and writing an equation to match the problem.  Also, label your answer.

2.      Heads and Tails

3.       Xtra Math Practice at least 3 times.

Penmanship Homework

Practice your first and last name at least 5 times.

Today at 11:00 am, take a moment to think about all of the veterans and current servicemen and servicewomen who have bravely served our country.

READING HOMEWORK-Thank you so much for

having your child  read 3 “just right” books to you each week and filling out the reading log.  Reading to an adult is a wonderful way for your child to practice all of the decoding, comprehension and fluency skills learned at school.  Learning to read takes time and practice so the more time you spend with your child, the better reader he/she will become.

*Please read the attached letter which explains why reading 20 minutes a day is vitally important.

1st Grade Update:

Hands On Art-Thanks so much to Katrina Craycroft, lead docent, and all parents who helped with our first Hands On Art project of the year, Building a Foundation.  Students learned about the basic elements of architecture and then drew a building using the elements they learned about.

Halloween/Fall Celebration: All of the MAP students had a wonderful morning of crafts and games last Thursday.  Thanks so much to all parents who contributed time, talent and decorations to put this together.  MAP students and teachers really appreciate all you do! A special thank you goes to Leslie Holley for coordinating this celebration.

Reading:  The reading strategy practiced this week is:  Readers are brave when they get to hard words.  Sometimes it isn’t easy to figure out a word but readers always are brave and try multiple strategies on words they can’t figure out right away.  Readers never give up and always ask, “Does this make sense?”

Math:  Students are identifying common attributes of a group of shapes and describing, comparing and naming 2-D shapes.  Please read the attached letter which describes related geometry activities to try at home.

Science: Last Friday we partnered with the 5th graders from Mr. McClelland’s class to learn about variables.  Students did experiments with catapults and various size cups in water to find out how changing one thing will change the outcome of the experiment.  1st graders explained what they have learned about milkweed bugs and butterflies.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

My conference schedule is on the back of this homework sheet.  If you haven’t signed up for a conference or need to change your conference time please call (530-1843) or e-mail (mancusom@peninsula.wednet.edu) me. Don’t forget-this is a parent/student/ teacher conference.  Your child will have a key role in the conference so plan on bringing him/her along.
