Hands on Art- Our 2nd Hands on Art project of the year will be Wednesday, February 24th at 10:00.  This project needs lots of parent helpers so please consider joining us for the morning.  Please e-mail me if you can help.

Concert Opportunity The Tacoma Concert Band will be having a concert Saturday, February 20th at 7:30 at the Pantages Theater.  The principal tuba player with the New York Philharmonic will be featured and our own Mrs. Cushner will be playing the oboe.  Children are free with paid adult admission.

Math:  Our class has started a new unit-What Would You Rather Be?  This unit is about data-the facts or information we collect about people and thing in our world.  Please read the attached letter which explains the goals your child will be working on in this unit.

This week you will be working on your valentines and valentine container which you will bring to school Monday, February 8th.  You will be exchanging valentines with your own classmates and the MAP kindergarteners for a total of 44 children.  Names are on the back of the valentine container information.

Please print each child’s first name using your neatest 1st grade penmanship.

Parents-please have your child do the printing. Thanks so much!

  • Valentine container information is attached to this homework sheet.
  • Please make sure your first name in on your container in LARGE letters.

There will be no math homework this week except to work on Xtra Math.  Please keep reading every day and night for Read and Lead.

Thursdays are Read and Lead turn in days.  I send Read and Lead sheets to the office first thing in the morning so don’t forget yours in your backpack!

Did you practice your 5 spelling words?  Are you ready for your spelling test today?

Ms. Pitman’s Super Supply store is open every Friday from 12:00-12:30.  Only students who have money will be allowed to shop during the lunch recess.  If you bring money, please keep it in your backpack until recess.

1st Grade Update

Literacy: Fluency is a very important component of reading.  Having your child reread books is the perfect opportunity to work on fluency (reading smoothly with expression).  The first time your child reads a book he/she is working very hard on decoding the words.  After the first reading, have your child read it again, this time using more expression and pausing at commas and stopping at periods, exclamation points and questions marks, with correct intonation.  Then, for the 3rd reading, your child should “read like a movie star!” After this last reading, have your child retell the story, including all of the important parts in order and naming the characters, not “he” or “she”).  You may count all of this reading and discussion time for Read and Lead minutes.

Science: Students learned that temperature describes how hot or cold something  is and that temperature is measured with a thermometer.  The children then constructed a model thermometer which you will find in this Thursday Folder. Have your child demonstrate how a thermometer works!

Shoes for Haiti: Thanks so much to those of you who have sent “gently used” shoes to school for the Haitians. Please be sure shoes are taped or tied together before you send them to school.  I have included information about this service project on the back of this homework sheet in case you want to collect shoes from your relatives or neighbors.

Writers Workshop: PARENTS-Each student wrote an essay about Read and Lead.  Be sure to stop by the hall and read these essays because you will find out how much these 1st graders LOVE spending quiet time reading with you.

Math: This week students wrote numbers on a counting strip (a favorite 1st grade math project)! Then students counted by 10’s and circled those numbers in red; counted by 5,s, circling those numbers in purple and counted by 2’s, circling those number in a favorite color.  Please have your child practice counting by 10’s, 5’s and 2’s.
