2nd Grade Update

Fire Safety Visit: Nanette Tatum from the Gig Harbor Fire Department presented a fire safety lesson and sent a packet home with each child.  Please read the fire safety packet information with your child and have him/her conduct a home fire safety check and escape plan, and turn it in on WED.

Sight Night: Congratulations to all of the MAP students for another successful Sight Night.  425 pairs of glasses were collected and given to the Lion’s Club.  These glasses help many people in other countries see better.  You should be proud of your efforts on this service project!

Progress Reports:  Celebrate your progress!  Tell your parents what you’ve learned this trimester and discuss your goals.

Sharing and Caring

*Save the Date!*

We would like to invite you to our 10th annual Sharing and Caring program.  This year your child will be singing in 2 programs.  Wednesday, Dec. 9th, from 7 to 8 pm is our special performance for families, and Thursday, Dec. 10th, at 9:15 is our school performance.

Students and visitors are invited to bring new unwrapped toys, books, games, clothing, canned food, and gift certificates for those families in need during the holiday season.  We will donate all contributions to GH FISH and Key Peninsula Children’s Home Society.

Students may begin bringing in their items on Dec. 1st.

Thank you for your kindness!

2nd Grade Update

Conferences:  Attached you will find your conference information.  If you need to change your day or time please call or email me.  Please remember that this is a parent-student-teacher conference.  Your child will have a key role in the conference so plan on bringing him/her along.

Reading:  We continue to make sure that we have selected “just right” books to read during our read to self time.  While reading, we are practicing the comprehension strategy of visualizing or making a movie in our head of what is happening in the story.  The decoding strategy we’ve reviewed this week is focusing on parts of the words we know to help us figure out longer words.

Writing: We are working on “painting a picture” in a reader’s mind by using words to illustrate how we were feeling.  For example, instead of writing, “I was embarrassed.”  We may write, “My face turned bright red and I slumped down in my seat so no one could see me.”

Math:  We have begun a new unit in math called, Stickers, Number Strings, and Story Problems.  The focus of this unit is using what you know to make problems easier to solve, developing and refining strategies for solving a variety of addition and subtraction problems, and counting by groups.  This week we practiced using what we know to add a string of numbers.  For example, when solving this problem, 8 + 5 + 2 = _, students may use this strategy: 8 + 2 = 10 and 10 + 5 = 15, so the answer is 15.

Science:  Last Friday, we partnered with the 5th graders from Mr. McClelland’s class to learn about variables.  Students did experiments with catapults and various sized cups of water to find out how changing one thing will change the outcome of the experiment.  2nd graders explained what they have learned about milkweed bugs and butterflies.

2nd Grade Update

Hands on Art:  Thanks so much to Katrina Craycroft, lead docent, and all the parents who helped with our first Hands on Art project of the year, Building a Foundation.  Students learned about the basic elements of architecture and then drew a building using these elements.

Halloween/Fall Celebration: All of the MAP students had a wonderful morning of crafts and games last Thursday. Thanks so much to all of the parents who contributed time, talent and decorations to put this together.  MAP students and teachers really appreciate all you do!  A special thank you goes to Leslie Holley for coordinating this celebration!

Reading: The reading strategy practiced this week was: visualization.   When readers really understand what they are reading they are able to picture the story in their minds.  If they are not able to visualize what is happening in the text, they need to go back and reread.  Ask your child what he/she visualizes.

Math:  Students have been identifying objects and designs that have mirror symmetry and have been determining what makes a design symmetrical.

Reading Homework:  Thank you so much for having your child read a “just right” book to you for at least 20 minutes every day.  Reading to an adult is a wonderful way for your child to practice all of the decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills learned at school.  Learning to read well takes time and practice, so the more time you spend reading with your child, the better reader he/she will become.
