HOMEWORK – Due Thurs. 11/5

This week’s writing prompts are more like diary or journal entries. They are not formal writing assignments and following the steps of the writing process is not required. This assignment has been given for the following reasons...to give students an opportunity to focus on their personal writing goals while they come up with great ideas and to practice either their cursive or keyboarding.

*Reading:

·         Read for 1 ½ hours or more. Record at least 5 connections that you make to the text.

_______________________             ________________________

                          (student signature)                                (parent signature)

·         Please spend 30 minutes reading informational text (a book, the newspaper, a magazine, etc). Show and explain the importance of 5 different text features to a family member. Have them initial here _______ when you’ve done this.

*Math:

  •  Xtra Math: Log on at least 3 times this week at home and complete a session each time. Have your parent initial here ________ when you’ve finished this.
  • Make a list of each room in your house. Then go to each room and count the outlets. Use tally marks to keep track of them. Determine the range and create a line plot showing the data you collected. Your range determines the numbers at the bottom of the line plot. The numbers should start with your smallest number. The x’s represent each room with that number of outlets.

*Spelling/Vocabulary: Your words are:  nutrient     dormant     germination     organism                                               crustaceans     antennae     habitat     territory     estivate     function

  • Throughout this week, please discuss these science words with family members and/or friends. Keep the definition paper that was sent home today and use it to study the words and their definitions throughout the next 2 weeks.

The spelling and vocabulary test for these words will be on Thurs. 11/12.

*Writing: Respond to one of the following prompts. You may do this in cursive or on the computer.

  • October 27 was Navy Day. It has been celebrated since 1922. Think of the different branches of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserves). Choose 1 branch and describe 3 ways that you might celebrate its day.
  • Describe some of your favorite Halloween memories. Help your audience to visualize these memories and to “see” what was so special about them.

NOTE: Please staple your reading connections, math & writing to the back of this paper.

Have fun on Halloween!

Dear Parents and Families,

NEW REPORT CARD KEY: This year we have a new report card with a new key. A 4 no longer reflects Exemplary Performance. A 4 now reflects that a student is exceeding their grade level standards. This means doing work from a curriculum at a higher grade level. Therefore, very few 4’s will be given out anymore in curriculum areas. I know this is a change in thinking for us. I’m still adjusting to it too within my daily grading, but I’m sure we will all get used to the change. J

MATH: We just finished up our unit on multiplication, factors and multiples. Our class average on the pretest for this unit was 69%. Our average on the posttest was 80%!

PUMPKINS: If you have not brought in a small pumpkin yet, please send it in tomorrow. Don’t forget to put your name on the bottom of your pumpkin with a sharpie.

FALL CONFERENCE SIGN UPS: Please stop by school by 10/30. The sign up sheets are in the hallway outside of the music room. They will be taken down after the Fall Ball so we can start contacting parents who have not signed up.

PAPERWORK: We still need the following:

*Golden Student Handbook Forms: Chris, Myelle, James, Gissele
