          BOOK ORDERS: February book orders went home today. Please return all orders by Tuesday, Feb. 9th.

          SHOES FOR HAITI: Thank you so much for all of your donations! The last day to send in shoes is Thursday, February 11th.

          READ & LEAD If you need it, you may record the following adult reading time:

          VALENTINES PARTY: Just a heads up that our Valentines party will be on Thursday, 2/11 so that our MAP kindergarteners will be able to participate with us! J

          SUPER SCHOOL SUPPLY STORE: We will be visiting the store tomorrow for the first time. Students may bring money, but no pennies please. The store will be open on Fridays during lunch recess.

January 21

Dear Parents and Families,  

          READ & LEAD Homework will continue to be scaled back during R & L to allow extra time for reading! I expect all of my students to participate in this great program. If you need it, you may record the following adult reading time: 1/20 ~ Family Huddle ~ 20 minutes. Also, several kids are getting adult reading time in with Mrs. Piacitelli…they know who they are. Don’t forget to record your time: 1/20 ~ Island Book One ~ 20 minutes.

       CURRICULUM UPDATE: We’ve finished up our math unit on multiplication and division. The final test went home today. Our class average on the pretest of this unit was 48% and our class average on the post test was 77%. BIG Improvement! Please continue to encourage practice with both the multiplication and the division algorithms at home! This week we started a new unit on Measurement and Geometry. In writing we just finished the latest school wide prompt; an expository essay on an after school club or activity. We are also writing and publishing habitat adventures. In reading we just completed our habitat unit, will start new literature circles next week and will begin a new Making Meaning unit which focuses on expository text.

       HELP: Our wooden rocking chair is officially falling apart. L If anyone has one that they would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated!!

       EMERGENCY PACKS: A huge Thank You to Mrs. Dooley for sending in emergency packs for all of our students who haven’t been able to bring them in!!

          JANUARY BOOK ORDERS went home today. Please return all orders and payment by Wednesday, Jan. 20th.

       FIELD TRIP: Our field trip to the Woodland Park Zoo has been scheduled for Thursday, June 3rd. I thought I would let you know right away since so many parents like to go on this trip and need to take the day off. Please let me know if you’d like to be added to the chaperone list.

*Expository Writing Practice:                   

  • Prompt: In several paragraphs, explain to your teacher what is/was so special about your pet. You may write about a pet you have now or used to have. You may even write about a relative’s pet who you love.
  • Your final draft should have several paragraphs (3-5) and should be about 2 pages long. It should be typed, but may be written in cursive if you don’t have access to a computer & printer. If you have a little extra space, please add an illustration. Please use the attached expository WASL checklist to help you have the best paper possible. Keep this rubric somewhere safe so you can refer to it when you have other prompts like this!
  • Don’t forget: spell check, color, word art, clip art, digital photos (if you have them) and borders!   

NOTE: Please paperclip your writing to the back of this paper. It will be going in your scrapbook.
