Extra Credit/Make-Up Assignment Directions Option 1: Science in the News Step 1: find and read an article from a magazine or newspaper that discusses a current science story (within the last year preferably). Science television programs, videos, and internet articles are also acceptable as resources. Note: any other resource must be checked out with me before you do a write-up. Step 2: complete a one-page write-up that includes the following information (in the format listed): Note: Skip one line between paragraphs. [Paragraph 1] Authors name (if given) last name first. Title of the article or program (“in quotations”) Magazine or newspaper name, (underline) Date of the issue (or date watched for video/TV)
[Paragraph2] A 3-5 [complete] sentence summary of the article (or program). [Paragraph 3] Three facts (not opinions) stated by the author about the subject of the article or program. You may choose to number these (1, 2, 3) or write them in paragraph form. [Paragraph 4] A 3-5 [complete] sentence paragraph expressing your reaction to the article or program. Be descriptive about your reaction. Ex. “I like the article because… NOT "I liked it OK.”
Option 2: Earthweek A diary of a planet is a weekly feature in the Tacoma mews tribune and on the World Wide Web (Sites listed at the bottom) this feature provides a summary of global events and the impact they have on the environment, science and society. Although ?I ma ohw :esarhp terces you may not realize the immediate impact affect these event have on you, many have direct (or in direct) connections to where you live. This Earthweek activity is designed to help you:
Step I: Choose one of the sites listed below and print a copy of Earthweek. Step II: For each story answer the following questions (in complete sentences) a) How might the event in the story impact you where you live? (Directly or indirectly) b.) Is the causes of the event human-made or natural? List some positive and negative effects that have resulted or may result from this event. c.) How does the story relate to your subject area (7th grade-life science, 8th grade-physical science, weather and astronomy)? See example below for this section. Ex. (8th Grade) A story about a tornado is relevant to a discussion of weather because tornadoes originate in the atmosphere) Ex. (7dth Grade) a story about an oil spill is relevant to a discussion of life science because many organisms are killed injured or left without a home after an oil spill. * Remember that life science in clues any topic associated with living things. Option 3: Puzzles and Lateral Puzzles Step 1: Follow the link to Puzzles. New puzzles are usually added weekly. Step 2: E-mail the answer along with your name and e-mail address.
