Tues, 9-14: Read chapter and finish notes in notebook, assign 5 themes reading

Wed, 9-15: Chapter II act it outs and discussion, assign chapter 2 processing

Fri, 9-17: 2nd period--counselors, 4th--library orientation and finish chapter 2

Mon 9-20: 2nd period, library orientation and finish chapter 2, 4-counselors

Wednesday 9-23: Discuss 5 themes of geography, hand out unit 1 review

Thur 9-24: Library orientation (1/2 period), review day

Mon 9-28: Test on Unit , HW:

Read 278 to 285 in Geography Alive

For pages 278 to 281 take notes in a chart like the one drawn on the board (due Tues)

For 283 to 285 list at least three important details for each section and then write down two questions you have about Africa based on each page of reading. (due Thur)

Tues 9-29: Library research pre-test, hand out map assignment

Thur 10-1: Journal: What do you think if when you think of Africa; Africa preview discussion, share notes and brainstorm questions

Fri 10-2: Africa Mapping Lab

Tues 10-6: Chapter 20, Geography Alive

Wed 10-7: Finish Chapter 20, Geography Alive

Mon 10-12: Review for map test and geo quiz

Tues 10-13: Map test, geo quiz. Assign world cultures pages 85-92, summarize each major topic heading in a 1-3 sentences.

Thur 10-15: Journal: How were patterns of life in Africa influenced by geography?; discuss life in Africa; watch videos about early kingdoms,  see links below. Take notes on why Europeans denied African history and how they did it.

Fri 10-16: Finish History Denied. Links to the video are here part 1, part 2, part 3. Read page 93-96 in World Cultures Book and take notes on the following topics

 Exploring the African Coast, Slavery in Africa, The Atlantic Slave trade, Effects of the Slave Trade

HW: Read pages 97-104 in World Cultures, Summarize each major heading, due Tuesday

Tues 10-20: Discuss colonialism. Journal: How would you feel if another group of people took over the area where you live? What would you do? Read "Gentleman of the Jungle" in World Cultures book

Wed 10-21: Journal: Why do most colonies eventually gain their independence. Read 107-111 in World Cultures, take notes on question: how did Africans gain independence. Assign final colonialism project, due Monday

Fri 10-23: Discuss post colonial challenges, work day

Mon 10-26: Colonialism work due, present; intro to panel discussion and annotated bibliography project

Wed 10-28: Bring Geography Alive, start chapter; work in library to start panel discussion project

Thur 10-29: Work time in library,  discuss project

Mon 11-2: Discuss reliability of sources, work time

Tues 11-3: Finish chapter ; library time
