Lab:

Specific Heat of Metals

Lab Format (2010 - 2011)

Lab write-ups  on Google Apps.

1.    Question: Can the Specific Heat of metals be calculated

2. Background:

  • What are the specific heats of the 3 metals (Zinc, Lead, & Brass)

  • What is/are the reason(s) for higher or lower specific heats for metals.

3.    Hypothesis:

a.       Prediction: The order of the specific heats from highest to lowest is (Zinc, Lead, & Brass)

b.      Give Reason:   Because .....

4.     Material: used (especially all equipment used to measure)

4.     Procedures: (at least 5 steps making sure that you include “record data” and “repeat steps ----“)

5.     Data: (in table)

6.    Conclusion:

a.       Was your Hypothesis correct or not.

b.      Metal with the Highest specific heat was

c.       Metal with the Lowest specific heat was

d.       What was the reason for the order of specific heat.

e.       Evaluate Errors: Explain where you may have experienced possible errors and calculate % error if applicable.

f.        Extension of Reason: What future experiment would you do in order to prove or validate your Reason (the reason you gave in your Hypothesis) to extend your experiment.

g.       Learning: What did you learned or better understand after doing this Lab and/or how is this concept used in the world today.
