1. a) A dam that has a water lever of 120m high has a pipe at the bottom that sends the water to a turbine. What is the speed of the water as it goes through the pipe (assume that there is no back pressure on the water slowing it down as it is leaving the pipe)?

b) What is the flow rate if the cross section area of the pipe is 2.0m2?

c) What is the volume that leaves the dam in 3 mins?

1. a) mgh = 1/2mv2

     v = √(2gh) = √(2)(10)(120)

     v = √(2,400) = 50m/s

b) Flow rate = Volume/time = (Velocity)(area)

 (vA) = (50m/s)(2.0m2) = 100 m3/s

c) Flow rate = Volume/time

          100 m3/s  = Volume/180s

          Volume = (100 m3/s)(180s) = (18,000m3
