Write in Scientific Notation the following numbers:

  • 155

  • -4,009

  • 555,000,000,000

  • 12.5

  • 0.56001

  • 0.056001

  • 0.05600

 Number of Significant  Figures:

Pacific (pd) Ocean                   Atlantic Ocean

(#’s w/pd)                              (absence of period)

Concept:   (Everyone wants to come to America)

·       Atlantic (numbers without a period): Start counting from right with first significant figure (other than Zero).  Examples

1,207=  4

2050 =  3

 200  =  1

·        Pacific (numbers with a period): Start counting from left with first significant figure (other than Zero) and count All numbers to the right after the first.    Examples

2,076.9  = 5

   20.50  = 4

   0.020  =  2

Scientific Notation:

  • One significant figure (between 1 and 9) to the left of the decimal pt.
  • Must have the correct number of Significant figures in total
  • Use correct exponent to equal normal number

Examples:

21   =  2.1  x 101

211 =  2.11  x 102

2,111     =  2.111  x 103

0.21 =  2.1  x 10-1

        0.00211 =  2.11  x 10-3

        0.02100 =  2.100 x 10-2

2.   AP  Physics Math Review

 Using powers of ten to describe very big and very small numbers.

Remember this stuff.

10,000 = 104

1,000 = 103

100 = 102

10 = 101

1 = 100

0.1 = 10-1

0.01 = 10-2

0.001 = 10-3

0.0001 = 10-4

30,000 = 3x 10,000 = 3x104

30,000 = 30x 1000 = 30x103

30,000 = 30,000 x 1 = 30,000x100

30,000 = 3,000,000x 0.01 = 3,000,000x10-2

All of the above are correct.

They all describe 30,000
