Ms. Bergh's BackgroundHello! Welcome to Gig Harbor High School! You have an exciting year of science ahead of you! I have been teaching at Gig Harbor High School for 13 years! I did my undergraduate work in biology and secondary education at Pacific Lutheran University. Go Lutes! In 2001, I completed a three year M.S. in Biology program at Washington State University, with a focus on biotechnology. While in this program, I participated in an internship at Batelle Laboratories, investigating a new program called the "Virtual Cell." Since then, I have continued to delve into genetics education by participating in a variety of professional development programs, including the High School Human Genome Program, the Pfizer Leadership Institute in Human and Molecular Genetics, and the Science Education Partnership (SEP). My work with SEP in 2003 gave me the opportunity to work with a mentor scientist, Chitra Kotwaliwale at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. My mentor was looking at the segregation of chromosomes during mitosis, using GFP, which is a glowing green protein! With a better understanding of this process, scientists hope to better understand problems that occur in cancerous cells. In 2004 I earned a National Board Teacher Certification in Young Adult and Adolescent Science and am currently the Science Department Chairperson. I spent this past summer teaching biology at Andrews Ganj K.V. in New Delhi India and had a great experience. This was a summer teacher program through the department of state, and was funded through a fullbright grant. I look forward to starting another great year at G.H.H.S.!
